April
Clement assigns Florence to nineteen-year-old Alessandro de' Medici, who had been made a duke, an appointment that was purchased from Charles.
He had arrived in Florence to take up his rule on July 5, 1531, and is made hereditary Duke of Florence nine months later by the Emperor (for Tuscany lies outside the Papal States), thereby signaling the end of the Republic.
Francesco Guicciardini had supported the Medici at the restoration but retires soon after to his country estate at Arcetri.
Michelangelo falls out of favor with the young Duke, and, fearing for his life, he flees to Rome, leaving assistants to complete the Medici chapel and the Laurentian Library.
