Clifford returns to Connacht, where he is…
August 1599 CE
Clifford returns to Connacht, where he is killed and his forces routed by Hugh Roe Ó Donnell at the Battle of Curlew Pass.
This defeat—along with that of Harrington in Wicklow—is rated by Cecil as the heaviest blow ever suffered by the English in Ireland, and Essex receives the blame at court.
O'Donnell and O'Neill are now free from any threat from the west, and a land attack by Essex in to Ulster through Armagh is rendered highly improbable.
