Columbus had learned from the Guyamí in…
April 1503 CE
Columbus had learned from the Guyamí in Panama of gold and a strait to another ocean, but had been told by local leader Quibían not to go down the river past a certain point.
After much exploration, he had established a garrison at the mouth of the Belén River in January 1503.
One of the ships becomes stranded in the river on April 6, and at the same time the garrison is attacked by Quibían and the other ships are damaged.
Shipworms also damage the ships in tropical waters.
Columbus leaves for Hispaniola, heading north on April 16.
