Condé had retired to Béarn after the Peace of Saint-Germain in 1570, and married Marie de Clèves, who dies in 1574 after giving birth to his daughter Catherine.

Nominally governor of Picardy, he has been kept under surveillance until, in 1574, he escapes to Alsace and begins raising troops for the Huguenots.
