Captain Cook, after returning Omai, delays his onward journey until December 7, when he travels north and on January 18, 1778 becomes the first European to visit the Hawaiian Islands.

In passing and after initial landfall at Waimea harbor, Kauai, Cook names the archipelago the "Sandwich Islands" after the fourth Earl of Sandwich—the acting First Lord of the Admiralty.

They observed that the inhabitants speak a version of the Polynesian language familiar to them from their previous travels in the South Pacific.
