Cranmer had remained isolated in Bocardo prison…
October 1555 CE
Cranmer had remained isolated in Bocardo prison for seventeen months before the trial started on September 12, 1555.
The trial, although it takes place in England, is under papal jurisdiction and the final verdict will come from Rome.
Cranmer admits under interrogation to every fact that is placed before him, but he denies any treachery, disobedience, or heresy.
The trial of Latimer and Ridley starts shortly after Cranmer's but their verdicts come almost immediately and on October 16 they are burnt at the stake.
Cranmer is taken to a tower to watch the proceedings.
As the wood is lighted, the seventy-year-old Latimer exhorts the younger Ridley with these words: "We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England as I trust shall never be put out."
