Capitalizing on the powerful anti-aristocratic passions thus aroused, Gustav summons a Riksdag early in 1789, at which he puts through an Act of Union and Security on February 17 with the backing of the three lower estates, delivering the coup de grace to Sweden's seventy-year-old parliamentarian system.
This reinforces monarchical authority significantly, although the estates retain the power of the purse.
In return, Gustav abolishes most of the old privileges of the nobility.
