Dominic’s new religious order combines the contemplative…
August 1221 CE
Dominic’s new religious order combines the contemplative life of the monk with the active apostolate of the evangelist.
The Dominican friars, who are to be poor and to travel on foot, receive rigorous theological training in order to preach and answer objections against the Christian faith.
The first house of friars is established at Toulouse.
Dominic himself dies on August 6, 1221 (he is later credited, inaccurately, with instituting the popular devotion of the rosary).
