The townspeople of Parras, located in the southern part of the Mexican state of Coahuila, enlist Doniphan's aid against a native raiding party that had taken children, horses, mules, and money.

The civilian population of northern Mexico offers little resistance to the American invasion, possibly because the country has already been devastated by Comanche and Apache raids.
