Four divisions of the XX Corps arrive…
March 1865 CE
Four divisions of the XX Corps arrive during the night to confront the Confederates.
At dawn, March 16, the Federals advance on a division front, driving back skirmishers, but they are stopped by the main Confederate line and a counterattack.
Mid-morning, the Federals renew their advance with strong reinforcements and drive the Confederates from two lines of works, but they are repulsed at a third line.
Late afternoon, the Union XIV Corps begins to arrive on the field but is unable to deploy before dark because of the swampy ground.
Hardee retreats during the night after having held up the Union advance for nearly two days.
