Edward Vernon, the British admiral who has devised the scheme, sees his four thousand occupying troops capitulate to local guerilla resistance, and more critically, a disease epidemic, forcing him to withdraw his fleet from the briefly renamed Cumberland Bay to British-owned Jamaica in December.

Lawrence Washington, the elder half-brother of future United States president George Washington, serves on Vernon's flagship HMS Princess Caroline (an eighty-gun three-decker) as a Captain of the Marines in 1741; he names his estate Mount Vernon in honor of his commander.
