1890 CE
France responds to events in Dahomey by building up its force in Cotonou to three hundred and fifty-nine men, two hundred and ninety-nine of which are Tirailleurs or French trained Senegalese and Gabonese.
On February 21, the French arrest the senior Fon officials in Cotonou and begin fortifying the town.
Skirmishes with local militia also break out.
It isn't long before word of this gets back to Abomey.
Dahomey sends a force straight to Cotonou with plans to bring it firmly back under Fon control once and for all.
