August 1609 CE
Galileo Galilei, who had seriously considered the priesthood as a young man, had instead enrolled for a medical degree at the University of Pisa at his father's urging.
He did not complete this degree, but instead studied mathematics, receiving in 1589 an appointment to the chair of mathematics in Pisa.
Fis father died in 1591 and he was entrusted with the care of his younger brother Michelagnolo.
He had moved the following year to the University of Padua, where he will teach geometry, mechanics, and astronomy until 1610.
During this period Galileo has made significant discoveries in both pure science (for example, kinematics of motion, and astronomy) and applied science (for example, strength of materials, improvement of the telescope; he independently builds the first refracting telescope in 1609).
His multiple interests include the study of astrology, which at this time is a discipline tied to the studies of mathematics and astronomy.
