Garibaldi privately assembles a volunteer force in July and August and begins a march from the south into Latium and Rome.

Fearful of Austrian reaction and of a military confrontation with the French garrison in Rome, Rattazzi mobilizes the regular army.

Garibaldi is wounded in the ensuing fighting and is arrested on August 29, 1862, at Aspromonte in Calabria.

The subsequent public outrage brings down Rattazzi's government.
