Gaunt’s second son by his mistress Katherine…
1404 CE
Gaunt’s second son by his mistress Katherine Swynford, twenty-seven-year-old Henry Beaufort, had been born in Anjou in about 1374 and educated for a career in the Church.
Their cousin Richard II of England in about 1390—maybe—had declared he and his two brothers and one sister legitimate. (There is some confusion on this point; there seems to have been another such procedure in 1397, involving Parliament.)
Nominated to be Bishop of Lincoln in February 1398 and consecrated five months later, he had been created Chancellor of England in 1403 after his half-brother deposed Richard and took the throne.
Beaufort resigns this position in November 1404 when he is appointed Bishop of Winchester.
