1574 CE
Humphrey Gilbert has meanwhile involved himself in an alchemical project with Smith, whereby iron is to be transmuted into copper and antimony and lead into mercury.
Gilbert had settled down and devoted himself to writing from late 1572.
He had in 1573 presented Elizabeth with a proposal for an academy in London, which will eventually be put into effect by Sir Thomas Gresham when he sets up Gresham College.
Gilbert also helps to establish the Society of the New Art with Lord Burghley and the Earl of Leicester, who have their alchemical laboratory in Limehouse.
