Giuseppe Verdi's first opera, Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, opens in Milan on November 17, 1839.
Written over a period of four years, to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on an existing libretto by Antonio Piazza probably called Rocester, it is first performed at the Teatro alla Scala.
The La Scala production enjoys "a fair success" and the theater's impresario, Bartolomeo Merelli, commissions two further operas from the young composer.
