Further talks between Harding and Makarios in January 1956 had begun favorably but degenerated into a stalemate and break up in March, with each side accusing the other of bad faith and intransigence.

A few days later, Makarios is seized, charged with complicity in violence, and, along with the bishop of Kyrenia and two other priests, exiled to the Seychelles.

This step removes the archbishop's influence on EOKA, leaving less moderate forces in control.

The level of violence on Cyprus increases, a general strike is called, and Grivas has political leadership thrust on him by the archbishop's absence.
