Britain sends Russia an ultimatum to withdraw from two Romanian provinces it has conquered, Moldavia and Wallachia, on February 27, 1854.

It is well understood that a collapse of the Ottoman Empire would set off a scramble for its territory and possibly plunge Britain into war.

To forestall that possibility, Britain seeks to keep the Russians from occupying Constantinople and taking over the Bosporous Straits, as well as from threatening India via Afghanistan.
