Henry II, on ascending the French throne,…
1561 CE
Henry II, on ascending the French throne, had promised to investigate the affair of the Massacre of Mérindol, and had had the leaders of the expedition tried by the Parlement of Paris, though all but one of them was eventually acquitted.
The massacres may have been influential in the process wherein the Waldenses became more and more attached to the Calvinist churches.
The treaty of June 5, 1561, grants amnesty to the Protestants of the Valleys, including liberty of conscience and freedom to worship.
Prisoners are released and fugitives are permitted to return home.
