Henry, with the encouragement of the great love of his life, Gabrielle d'Estrées, permanently renounces Protestantism on July 25, 1593, thereby earning the enmity of the Calvinists and of his former ally, Queen Elizabeth I of England.
He is alleged to have said, "Paris vaut bien une messe" ("Paris is well worth a Mass"), but there is much doubt about this.
