Holland and Zeeland are on the verge…
July 1584 CE
Holland and Zeeland are on the verge of offering the title of count to William when he is assassinated on July 10, 1584, at Delft, by Balthasar Gérard, a fanatical young Roman Catholic from Franche-Comté, spurred by the promises of the ban of Philip II.
His last words are a prayer for the people he had tried for so long to lead.
The family seat of Breda being now in enemy hands, he is buried in the New Church at Delft.
