Hong Rengan has developed an ambitious plan to expand the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom's boundaries.

General Li Xiucheng of the rebel forces encircle the region of Jiangnan, and approach the Zhejiang provincial capital, Hangzhou, disguised as Qing troops.

At Hangzhou, the sixty thousand Taiping troops are outnumbered by Qing defenders, so they employ several deceptions, such as placing hundreds of flags on a hill to give the impression of large numbers.

The city walls are destroyed with explosives on March 19, and the city is taken soon after.

The Mayor of Hangzhou commits suicide after the loss.
