The first known city in all of…
The first known city in all of the Americas is Caral, built in approximately 2500 BCE in the Supe Valley, two hundred kilometers north of Lima.
Caral is one of six world centers of the rise of civilization.
What is left from the civilization, also called Norte Chico, are about thirty pyramidical structures built up in receding terraces ending in a flat roof; some of them measured up to twenty meters in height.During the first half of the third millennium, the development of coastal and inland sites had occurred in parallel.
However, from 2500 to 2000 BCE, the period of greatest expansion, a decisive shift toward the inland sites occurred.
All development apparently occurs at large interior sites such as Caral, though they remain dependent on fish and shellfish from the coast.
The inhabitants of the irrigated valleys of coastal Peru now begin to produce finely woven cotton textiles.
