Hongi Hika moves from Waimate in 1826…
January 1826 CE
Hongi Hika moves from Waimate in 1826 to conquer Whangaroa and found a new settlement.
In part, this is to punish Ngāti Uru and Ngāti Pou—who Hongi Hika has displaced—for burning the ship Mercury and sacking Wesleydale, the Wesleyan mission at Whangaroa.
However, this shift soon splits his followers into two factions, those who stay in Waimate quarreling with the colonists at Whangaroa.
