August 1839 CE
The Carlist commander, Rafael Maroto, stages a mutiny against the clerical court of Don Carlos in 1839 and comes to terms with Baldomero Espartero, the most successful of Isabella's generals.
The resulting convention of Vergara—also known as the Abrazo de Vergara ("the embrace in Vergara"; Bergara in Basque)—ends the war.
This success earns Espartero the popular sobriquet, “the Peacemaker of Spain,” and the title Duke de la Victoria.
On August 31, the defeated Don Carlos leaves Spain for France.
