A small group of workers and intellectuals from the Pale form a Jewish Socialist political movement in in Vilnius 1897, known as the Bund, also called Jewish Bund, formally General Union of Jewish Workers in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia.

The bund calls for the abolition of discrimination against Jews and the reconstitution of Russia along federal lines.
