Bayer coins the name "heroin" in 1898 when the company begins production of diacetylmorphine, a stronger and supposedly nonaddictive form of morphine.

As it turns out, the exponentially higher alleviative effects of heroin, relative to those of morphine, are matched by heroin's addictive potential.
