Canada completes the purchase of the lands chartered to the Hudson’s Bay Company in July 1870.

On July 15, the Red River Settlement enters the Canadian Confederation as the province of Manitoba; the rest become the Northwest Territories.

The Hudson’s Bay Company, its political jurisdiction extinct, continues its commercial activities by expanding into real estate and the retail trade in various parts of Canada.
