President Bill Clinton goes on to Israel…
March 1996 CE
President Bill Clinton goes on to Israel in late March, following the anti-terrorism conference, and pledges a one hundred million dollar anti-terrorist package, including new state-of-the-art explosive detectors.
Many observers see the conference and the Clinton visit as thinly veiled attempts to boost the reelection prospects, of Peres, who lacks Rabin's security credentials and has been an outspoken advocate of partnership with Arafat.
The government acts against Jewish extremists it believes are planning to provoke the Palestinians or to assassinate leading members of the right-wing government they had helped to elect and whom they are now accusing of betrayal.
On March 27, Amir is sentenced to life imprisonment for the assassination and an additional six years for wounding one of Rabin's bodyguards.
