Antonio López de Santa Anna runs as a liberal and is elected President of Mexico by the legislatures of sixteen of the eighteen Mexican states on April 1, 1833.

Soon after, Santa Anna retires to his hacienda, allowing Vice President Valentín Gómez Farías to run the country.
