Leopoldo O’Donnell himself had commanded the victorious expeditionary force in the Spanish-Moroccan War of 1859-60, and greatly increased his popularity; he is awarded a dukedom on March 27, 1860, as the Duke of Tetuan (Duque de Tetuán).
