The shah cancels the unpopular tobacco concession in January 1892 when he sees that the British government "was waffling in its support for the Imperial Tobacco Company,".

The fatwa will be been called a "stunning" demonstration of the power of the marja'-i taqlid, and the protest itself will be cited as one of the issues that leads to the Constitutional Revolution a few years later.
