The Munich-based Einstein family business, the manufacture of electrical apparati, fails in 1894 and the family, who are nonobservant Jews, moves to Milan, Italy.
Their fifteen-year-old son Albert decides officially to renounce his German citizenship.
He fails an examination that would have allowed him to pursue a course of study leading to a diploma as an electrical engineer at the Swiss federal Institute of Technology (the Zurich Polytechnic).
