A four-man team led by Hamdi Quran…
October 2001 CE
A four-man team led by Hamdi Quran shoots and kill Israeli rightist Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi, seventy-five, who is also the head of Moledet, at Jerusalem's Hyatt Hotel on October 17, 2001, in retaliation for Israel's assassination of the Secretary General of the PFLP.
The PFLP claims responsibility for the assassination, characterizing Moledet as "one of the most racist political parties in the Israeli government."
They call Ze'evi "a racist criminal who called openly for the transfer and killing of the Palestinian people as well as the killing of Palestinian leaders and the destruction of the Palestinian Authority, even going so far as to call for the killing, expulsion, or arrest of President Arafat."
Quran will be tried and sentenced in 2002 by the Palestinian National Authority to eighteen years for the crime and imprisoned in a Jericho prison under the supervision of British and American wardens under a deal worked out between US President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in April 2002.
