Giuseppe Gioachino Belli had begun in 1830 to compose sonnets in Romanesco, the Roman dialect, for which he will gain fame.

His sonnets are often satirical and anti-clerical, as when he defines the Cardinals as "dog-robbers", for example, while Pope Gregory XVI keeps "Rome as his inn room".
