When he reaches Pensacola on May 23, the governor and the one hundred and seventy-five-man Spanish garrison retreats to Fort Barrancas, leaving the city of Pensacola to Jackson.
The two sides exchange cannon fire for a couple of days, then the Spanish surrender Fort Barrancas on May 28.
Jackson leaves Colonel William King as military governor of West Florida and goes home.
