November 1209 CE
John had immediately retaliated to the papal interdict by closing down the churches.
Although he has issued instructions for the confiscation of all church possessions, individual institutions are able to negotiate terms for managing their own properties and keeping the produce of their estates.
After his excommunication in November 1209, John tightens the measures taken in the previous year and he accrued significant sums from the income of vacant sees and abbeys: for example, the church in 1213 will lose an estimated one hundred thousand marks to the Crown.
The Pope, realizing that too long a period without church services could lead to loss of faith, gives permission in 1209 for some churches to hold Mass behind closed doors.
