Kamehameha, with his new army, feels confident enough to move on the neighboring islands of Maui and Oʻahu, already weakened by a war of succession that has broken out between King Kahekili II's son and brother.
Kamehameha may or may not have known that his rival, King Kalanikūpule, also possesses firearms, and is planning a move against him when the aliʻi nui of Hawaiʻi invades these islands.
Kamehameha sets sail in 1795, with an armada of nine hundred and sixty war canoes and ten thousand soldiers.
He quickly secures the lightly defended islands of Maui and Molokaʻi at the Battle of Kawela.

Santa Cruz de Nuca remains under the control of New Spain until 1795, when it is abandoned under the terms of the third Nootka Convention.
The Nootka Crisis, which had grown into an international incident and the threat of war between Britain and Spain, had ended with the Nootka Convention of 1789.
Three separate Nootka Conventions are signed: it has taken over five years to resolve the many outstanding problems.
