February 634 CE
Khalid is on his way to attack Qadissiyah, a key fort on the way to Ctesiphon, when he receives a letter from Abu Bakr and is sent to the Roman front in Syria to assume the command of Muslim armies with the intent of conquering Roman Syria.
During his stay in Iraq, Khalid is also installed as military governor of the conquered territory.
Khalid sets out for Syria from Al-Hirah, taking with him half his army, about eight thousand strong.
