Lautaro launches feelers from the river Itara…
1557 CE
Lautaro launches feelers from the river Itara towards Santiago and instead of confronting them, gives them the slip and makes for the city to attack it.
Despite the stealth under which the Mapuches move, the city leaders learn of the advance, and send a small expedition to detain them, buying time for word to be sent to Villagra to return to the city.
The Spanish forces meet in the field, and, presumably by the treason of a fellow Mapuche, discover the position of Lautaro's camp.
The conquistadors launch a surprise attack on April 29, 1557, from the hills of Caune, obtaining a decisive victory in which Lautaro is killed.
The resistance, traditionally labeled as the Arauco War, is to continue until the 1880s.
