Chile continues to prosper, even during internal and external conflicts.

When Spain attempts to reconquer Peru, Chile engages in a coastal war (1864-66) with the Spaniards, whose warships shell Valparaiso.

Once again, Chile asserts its sway over the west coast of South America.

Farming, mining, and commerce grow steadily until the world depression of the 1870s, when Chile will again turn to a war against its Andean neighbors.
