Banastre Tarleton, twenty-six years old, has enjoyed…
January 1781 CE
In December 1776, he and a small party had surprised and captured Patriot General Charles Lee in New Jersey.
He had served with distinction at the Siege of Charleston and the Battle of Camden.
Commanding the British Legion, a mixed infantry/cavalry force composed of American Loyalists who constitute some of the best British troops in the Carolinas, Tarleton had won victories at Monck's Corner and Fishing Creek.
He had become infamous among Patriots after his victory at the Battle of Waxhaws, because his men had killed American soldiers after they had surrendered.
Tarleton and the Legion march to Ninety Six on January 2.
After learning Morgan is not here, Tarleton decides to pursue his forces.
He asks for reinforcements of British regulars, which Cornwallis sends.
