Machiavelli, given responsibility for the Florentine militia…
1503 CE
Machiavelli, given responsibility for the Florentine militia in 1503, begins reorganizing the defenses of the city.
From 1503, Leonardo da Vinci undertakes several highly significant artistic projects in Florence, including the Battle of Anghiari mural for the council chamber of the Town Hall and the (lost) painting of Leda and the Swan.
He also begins painting his Saint John the Baptist and the mysterious, evocative portrait Mona Lisa.
Also known as “La Gioconda,” this portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo depicts a woman, dressed in the Florentine fashion of her day and seated in a visionary, mountainous landscape, wearing an enigmatic expression both alluring and aloof.
Leonardo displays, to remarkable effect, his “sfumato” technique of soft, hazy, heavily shaded modeling.
