Mary's captivity has been long and wearisome,…
1578 CE
Mary's captivity has been long and wearisome, only partly allayed by the consolations of religion and, on a more mundane level, her skill at embroidery and her love of such little pets as lap dogs and singing birds.
Her health has suffered from the lack of physical exercise, her figure has thickened, and her beauty has diminished, as can be seen in the best-known pictures of her in black velvet and white veil, dating from 1578.
