Maximilian of Habsburg, the younger brother of the Emperor of Austria, had formally accepted the vacant Mexican throne on April 10, signing the Treaty of Miramar, and lands at Veracruz on May 28 (or possibly May 29), 1864 in the SMS Novara.

He is enthroned as Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico.

His Belgian wife, Marie Charlotte Amélie Léopoldine, becomes Empress Carlota.
