A British naval squadron under William Cornwallis…
June 1795 CE
A British naval squadron under William Cornwallis had begun operating off Brittany on June 7; in the following week he had attacked a French merchant convoy and captured several ships.
In response, Vice-admiral Villaret de Joyeuse has led the main French fleet out of port to attack the British, who are spotted on June 16.
Heavily outnumbered, Cornwallis turns away from the French and attempts to escape into open water, with the French fleet in pursuit.
