Commander James Murray, dispatched by Wolfe at…
September 1758 CE
Murray’s vessels get caught in the falling tide and have to wait until the tide rise before they can enter the Bay.
This delay gives the Acadians time to escape.
The Raid on Miramichi Bay starts with an attack on present day Bay du Vin.
In the village are about forty Acadian refugees that had fled peninsular Nova Scotia, led by Father Bonaventure.
Murray now deploys troops across Miramichi Bay to the present day community of Burnt Church.
The community has about thirty families.
By the time the troops arrive the Acadians have vacated the village.
Murray’s troops destroy their provisions, livestock, wigwams, houses and burn the stone church, after which the present community is named.
Murray’s troops are unable to travel the ten leagues up the river to Boishebert's refugee camp, known as "Camp de l’Espérance", at Beaubears Island, as their ships are too large to navigate the river.
These Acadians had previously escaped the Ile Saint-Jean Campaign.
Murray will return to Louisbourg on September 24.
