Morphine injections prescribed for hundreds of thousands of sick or wounded American soldiers in the U.S. Civil War have produced unprecedented numbers of addicts, about four hundred thousand during the war alone.
It had been supposed—mistakenly—that if opiates were administered through the vein, no hunger or addiction would develop, since the narcotic does not reach the stomach.
