Nicholas of Montenegro conducts a brilliant campaign, but Serbia's military capacity is extremely limited; and although a Russian general assumes command of the army and Serbia receives Russian volunteers, the Russian government does not at once provide the expected military assistance.

The ill-prepared and poorly equipped Serbian army fails to achieve offensive objectives in July and August but manages to repulse the Ottoman offensive into Serbia, and on August 26, Serbia pleads with the European powers to mediate in ending the war.
